And I would love bikes…

Filed under: Cycling, Personal, Walking — Alexis @ 1:54 am

…well, I do, most of the time. But not when this happens.

I’m doing fine, but I am thinking that seeing a doctor would be a good idea, and I feel a little stupid that I didn’t at least demand his contact info. And unfortunately I would have to go into the city to file a police report, which probably isn’t going to happen. The thought of having to deal with going to work today kind of makes me want to cry, even though I mostly feel fine.

I may write more about this later, but I’m just too tired to try to be funny right now.

I would love cars…

…if only they didn’t run on non-renewable fuel and accelerate the greenhouse effect and involve inefficient land use. But man, they are a marvel. They’re fast, warm, and the road system they travel on works in all kinds of weather. And while I might enjoy the workout of pushing my bike ahead against the wind, I sometimes do wish I could be somewhere at least a bit less cold while I did it.

Blog management

I’m working on getting OpenID enabled, for LiveJournal users, but there’s some software version issues, so it might be a while. In the meantime, feel free to use the existing system.

Weights and measures

Filed under: Food — Alexis @ 3:47 pm

I buy a lot of stuff in bulk, usually from Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco. I tend to get carried away when I go there and stock up on things, which is great for having things, but not so great for storing them. My storage containers are an assortment of jars saved mainly from Trader Joe’s, mostly either the standard size Mason jars (used for jam) or the double-sized applesauce jars. When I get home and try to put away what I bought, I usually find out that I bought enough that I can’t fit all of, for example, the black lentils, in one container, so I end up using jars halfway or with some lentils in a plastic bag and some in a jar, which doesn’t appeal to my sense of order and isn’t as easy to store and label. (Remember, I have a labelmaker and I’m not afraid to use it.)

It only occurred to me tonight while shifting things between various jars that the smart thing to do would be to weigh the amount of lentils that fits exactly into a jar, and then next time, buy exactly that amount. I even have a kitchen scale, perfect for the purpose. It turns out that the amount is about 12 ounces for lentils. I often buy a pound or more, since that seems like a logical amount. Hence my frequent container troubles. Now I just need to also measure everything that’s significantly different in density from small lentils (large beans, flour, and flat grains like oats) and know how much of it to buy.

Why did such a simple thing, for which I had all the necessary information and tools, take me so long to realize?

Knitting needles at your discretion

Filed under: Knitting — Alexis @ 3:35 pm

I find it incredibly ridiculous that the TSA website states that knitting needles are allowed, but at the discretion of the screener, may be determined to be a weapon. They’re either a weapon or they’re not. Knitting needles may or may not be dangerous, but they are NOT the problem and I resent having to worry about whether the TSA screener in question is having a bad day in determining whether I’m going to have anything to do on my flight tomorrow.

If the regulations really served a security purpose, you’d think they could some up with some sort of objective standard.
